Deuteronomy 12:5-7 ESV
But you shall seek the place that the Lord your God will choose out of all your tribes to put his name and make his habitation there. There you shall go, and there you shall bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the contribution that you present, your vow offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock. And there you shall eat before the Lord your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your households, in all that you undertake, in which the Lord your God has blessed you.
In Deuteronomy 12:5, 11 and 21 a powerful statement repeats. In this chapter Moses is speaking to the Israelites about the place of worship God would define for them. They were to bring their sacrifices to this location alone to offer it to God.
Where is God’s name put today? …on you. As a baptized child of God you are marked with His name as in that name Father, Son and Holy Spirit you are baptized.
Where does that happen? In the place where the ones marked with God’s name gathered. In His Divine Service where His gifts are freely given and His praises are graciously received.
The place where God puts His name is a powerful place. The place where Yahweh puts His name is a place where God is at work doing His stuff for the world. You are that place as a new creation in Christ.
